A company has recalled more than 260,000 packages of shredded cheese in 31 U.S. states due to potential contamination with metal fragments, U.S. health authorities reported.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (known as the FDA) indicated that the company, Great Lakes Cheese Co., recalled the products from various chains including Target, Walmart, and Aldi.

The recall includes various types of cheeses such as mozzarella, Italian style, pizza style, mozzarella and provolone, and mozzarella and parmesan.

The recall is classified as Class II, because the product 'may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote,' according to the FDA website.

An FDA representative notes that ingesting metal fragments can cause injuries such as dental damage, laceration of the mouth or throat, or laceration or perforation of the intestine.
