De Miguel was preparing to control a ball in the midfield when Owono came out to clear it, hitting the opposing striker in an incident that left the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium in silence.
The referee noted in the match report that Owono, whom he sent off, had made impact with his leg raised into De Miguel.
"The police have opened an investigation in coordination with judicial authorities regarding the striker's death," police sources informed AFP.
The Tenerife player remained lying on the ground, where he was attended to by medical staff.
According to the Spanish press, the footballer suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest following the blow, from which he was initially resuscitated.
The referee suspended the match and De Miguel was evacuated by ambulance to the hospital, where he was admitted.
Deterioration
Initially, it had been reported that he was "stable despite the severity," although another statement late Tuesday morning indicated that he had "neurologically deteriorated."
"There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can mitigate this feeling filled with sadness," Tenerife expressed in their statement, released on social media over a black-and-white photo of the player.
"We stand with his devastated family, with his loved ones, and with all of the Tinerfeñismo that today mourns this cruel outcome," the Canary Islands club added.
De Miguel had been at Tenerife for a little over a season, having arrived in the summer of 2025 from Castellón, helping the Canary Islands club rise to the Second Division.
Originally from Madrid, the striker was a respected goalscorer in the lower divisions of Spanish football.
Messages of condolence
As soon as the news of his passing became known, messages of condolence poured in, starting with Andorra.
"With broken hearts and devastated, we want to send our sincerest condolences to Jesús de Miguel's family, to all his teammates, friends, and CD Tenerife," the Andorran club stated in a message on their social media.
"I am so sorry with all my soul. Rest in peace, Jesús," former footballer Gerard Piqué, the majority shareholder of Andorra, wrote on the X network.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid, and other clubs have joined in mourning the death of the Tenerife player.
The Spanish Federation has postponed the Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina matches that were scheduled to take place this Tuesday as a sign of respect.
"The great Spanish football family remains united in sorrow for this sad loss and extends all its love and support to the family, friends, and loved ones of Jesús de Miguel," the RFEF stated in a press release.
UEFA has also declared a minute of silence in all its matches for the week after expressing its "deepest condolences" for the death of the Spanish player.
Expressions of grief have also arrived from other spheres of Spanish society and politics.
"My deepest condolences to his family and those close to him, and a big hug to the club, players, technical team, management, and fans during these difficult moments. We share in your pain," wrote Sports Minister Milagros Tolón.
