With seven gold medals won this Sunday, Mexico continues to increase its medal count as the leader of the Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games standings, thanks to victories in the half marathon, race walking, diving, and pistol events.
The day began at dawn with the half marathon, held on the Santo Domingo boardwalk, where in the men's category, Dominican athlete Álvaro Abreu triumphed to the joy of the locals, setting a new Games record with a time of 1h02:48, beating the previous record held by Guatemalan Alberto González Mindez with 1h03:50 (2023); meanwhile, Alberto González won silver for Guatemala and Puerto Rican Héctor Pagán took bronze.
In that same event, in the women's category, Mexicans Laura Galván (gold) and Adela Honorato (silver) kicked off the medal haul for their country today, followed by Guatemalan Viviana Aroche.
Galván, with a time of 1h13:43, also broke the Central American and Caribbean record, which until this morning was held by Venezuelan Joselyn Brea (1h15:04) set in 2023.
In the same setting, which had the city's iconic 'macho' obelisk as its starting point, the race walking half marathon took place, with a podium sweep by the Mexicans.
In the men's category, Mexican Ricardo Ortiz took the gold, followed by Colombian Eider Arévalo and fellow Mexican Roberto Vázquez.
This Mexican dominance also extended to the aquatic facilities of the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center, where the diving events took place.
In the men's 10-meter platform, the gold medal was won by Mexican Randal Willars, followed by his compatriot Emilio Treviño (silver), and Venezuelan Jesús González (bronze).
Furthermore, in the men's 10-meter synchronized platform event, the Mexican pair of Willars and Treviño won, while second place went to Cubans Jesús Rodríguez and Bernaldo Arias, and the bronze was taken by Colombians Sebastián Villa and Alejandro Solarte.
Meanwhile, in the women's 3m springboard, the best divers were Mexican Zyanya Parra (gold), Colombian Daniela Zapata (silver), and Mexican Rut Paez (bronze).
Venezuela y Colombia siguen sumando
Although Mexico also added to its medal count, Venezuela and Colombia won gold in the 10m air pistol team events and road cycling.
In the case of the men's 10m air pistol team event, Venezuela won (gold), followed by Mexico (silver) and Guatemala (bronze); while in the women's counterpart, the prize went to Mexico (gold), Puerto Rico (silver), and Cuba (bronze).
Likewise, in road cycling, whose men's race was held this Sunday, Colombian Nicolás Gómez won by a hair, taking 3h47:59 to cover the 169.5 kilometers of the event, crossing the finish line just one second ahead of Costa Rican Joseph Ramírez (silver) and Panamanian Roberto González (bronze), as well as the fourth-place finisher, Mexican César Macías, all of whom clocked in at exactly 3h48:00.
As of this Sunday, Mexico clearly leads the medal table with 112 gold, 76 silver, and 59 bronze medals. At a considerable distance is the second-place delegation from Colombia, with 53 golds, 64 silvers, and 42 bronzes; while Cuba occupies third place (24 golds, 20 silvers, and 31 bronzes).
Close to 'the greatest of the Antilles' is Venezuela, with 19 gold, 31 silver, and 57 bronze medals.
In the fight for fifth place between the Puerto Ricans and the host Dominicans, Puerto Rico is ahead with 14 golds, 19 silvers, and 26 bronzes; while the Dominican Republic holds sixth place (13 golds, 14 silvers, and 42 bronzes).
This Monday, among other disciplines, the highly anticipated athletics finals of the men's and women's 100m, women's 5,000m, and mixed 4x400m relay will take place.
