Amid the criticism and debates that flooded social media regarding Messi, his behavior, and his performance during the 2026 World Cup, Sergio "Kun" Agüero broke his silence and publicly defended his friend, questioning the level of attacks the captain of the Argentine national team has received. Both players met in 2005 on Argentina's U-20 youth team, and since then, they have forged a relationship they consider to be like brothers. For years, they were inseparable roommates during national team training camps.
For all these reasons, the former striker came to his defense after he was severely criticized for his behavior in the 2026 World Cup. In a program that aired days before the final against Spain, the former Argentine footballer mentioned that he did not understand what Messi had done to them for such hatred toward him to exist on social media worldwide.
Kun Agüero stated that he was surprised by the intensity of the negative comments: "Why so much hatred for Leo? I don't understand... People, calm down. What did Leo do to you? Why so, so much hatred?" he said.
The former player also recalled the world champion's career and asked people to value everything he has contributed to soccer throughout his career. "He is the best of them all, he is the best in history... He is 39 years old, look at what he did... Two assists. There are a lot of people who are 39, like us... I'm 38, I'm about to turn 39 and I'm here on the stream," he indicated.
He pointed out: "In comparison, Leo is playing as if he were 20 years old and we are here in front of a camera talking nonsense (...) No one will ever equal Leo (...) for me, it will be years and years before we see someone like Leo again."
