The Mexican national team routed Guatemala 4-0 on Thursday to qualify with a perfect performance for the quarterfinals of the Concacaf U-20 Championship, a qualifier for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and next year's World Cup.
Diego Ramírez, Hugo Camberos, Luis Gamboa, and Nelson Cedillo scored for the Mexicans under coach Alex Diego, who improved as the game went on after 40 minutes of inaccuracy.
Mexico was better in the first half, had possession of the ball, but did little from the final third forward.
In the 44th minute, Brayan Guerra saved the Guatemalans by clearing a shot from Gamboa, but a minute later, Ramírez accepted a ball in the area and headed it in to make it 1-0.
The second half was dominated by the Mexicans; in the 55th minute, Camberos scored with his right foot past goalkeeper Rogelio Barrera, and in the 65th minute, Gamboa broke free unmarked and completed the rout with a cross-shot from the right.
In the 89th minute, Cedillo shot from behind on a free kick; he sent the ball into the net with his left foot over the wall to make it 4-0.
Mexico led Group B with three wins in three outings and nine points, followed by Costa Rica with six points; Guatemala with three; and Antigua and Barbuda with none.
