The Buffalo Bills fired coach Sean McDermott after a painful NFL playoff loss over the weekend at the home of the Denver Broncos, the club reported on Monday.

Buffalo suffered a heartbreaking 33-30 overtime loss to the Broncos in the divisional round, the latest in a series of postseason failures under McDermott's leadership.

"Sean has done an admirable job leading our football team over the last nine seasons," said Terry Pegula, owner of the Bills.

"But I believe we need a new structure within our leadership to give this organization the best chance to take our team to the next level. We owe it to our players and the Bills Mafia," added Pegula in a statement on X.

McDermott's departure is the latest head coach firing to shake up the NFL.

Since the end of the regular season earlier this month, eight head coaches—a quarter of the league's 32 teams—have resigned or been fired.

Coach McDermott had been at the helm since 2017 and led the Bills to the playoffs in each of the last seven seasons.

They won five consecutive division titles from 2020 to 2024, but never advanced past the American Football Conference (AFC) championship game.

The 51-year-old McDermott leaves Buffalo with a 98-50 regular-season record, but just 8-8 in the playoffs.

The Bills have never won a Super Bowl, despite reaching four consecutive editions in the 1990s.
