When it comes to air travel, many people focus on prohibited items and end up leaving behind objects at home that are actually permitted. The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has a broad list of items that can pass through security checkpoints, some of which are quite unexpected.
Although security officers have the final say during inspection, official regulations allow for the transport of various uncommon items in carry-on luggage. These are some of the most surprising ones.
1. Fishing rods
Fishing enthusiasts can travel with their rods in the airplane cabin. The TSA allows this type of equipment in carry-on luggage, though it recommends checking each airline's size restrictions beforehand.
2. Skateboards
Skateboards can be transported in carry-on luggage as long as they comply with the dimensions permitted by the airline.
3. Ice or roller skates
Another item that often surprises travelers is skates. These objects can travel with you in the cabin and do not necessarily have to be checked.
4. Solid foods
Many people believe that all food is restricted, but the TSA allows the transport of numerous solid foods, including:
- Sándwiches.
- Chocolates.
- Galletas.
- Dulces.
- Frutas.
- Botanas secas.
What must be respected are the rules for foods that contain liquids or gels.
5. Nail clippers
Although they include a small metal blade, nail clippers are permitted in carry-on luggage and are considered acceptable everyday items for travel.
6. Disposable razors
Razors with the blade protected or integrated can also pass through security checkpoints, an advantage for those who want to save space and avoid checking luggage.
7. Selfie sticks
Famous selfie sticks generated doubt for years, but it is currently possible to carry foldable models in the cabin. In some cases, they may be subject to additional screening by security agents.
8. Inflatable mattresses with built-in pump
The official TSA list allows the transport of inflatable mattresses that incorporate an electric pump. However, they may be subject to additional screening and size restrictions by the airline.
9. Knitting tools
Knitting needles and similar materials often cause surprise among travelers, but the TSA generally authorizes these items in carry-on luggage. As with any object, they could be subject to additional inspection.
10. Electronic devices
Laptops, tablets, cameras, approved power banks, and cell phones are welcome in the cabin. In fact, the TSA and travel specialists recommend carrying valuable electronic equipment in carry-on luggage rather than checked bags.
Watch out for the liquid rule
Although many items are permitted, the TSA maintains the rule that liquids, gels, creams, and aerosols must travel in containers of 100 milliliters (3.4 ounces) or less inside a clear quart-sized bag. There are exceptions for medications, baby formula, and certain medical products.
The TSA reminds travelers that a permitted item may be subject to additional inspection or even be restricted if it presents any security concerns during the screening process. For this reason, it recommends consulting its official 'What Can I Bring?' tool before traveling.
