As every year, Dr. Stephen Leatherman, better known as Dr. Beach, published his list of the best beaches in the United States. The 2026 ranking evaluated different factors related to environmental quality, safety, natural characteristics, and visitor experience to select the 10 most outstanding beaches in the country.
The 2026 edition was dominated by Hawaii and Florida, although destinations in New York, South Carolina, and Massachusetts also appear. The number one beach of the year was Poipu Beach, on the island of Kauai, thanks to its unique natural conditions and its waters suitable for visitors of different ages.
1. Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii
Chosen as the best beach in the United States in 2026, Poipu Beach stands out because it is actually two beaches separated by a sandbar. A small island reduces the impact of the waves and creates calm zones ideal for families and children, while other areas offer more intense surf.
2. St. Andrews State Park, Florida
Located near Panama City Beach, this beach offers white sand, opportunities for bird watching, and excellent conditions for swimming and snorkeling in both the Gulf and the St. Andrews bay. Part of the park is only accessible by boat.

3. Caladesi Island State Park, Florida
Although it is no longer technically an island due to the closure of a natural channel, it remains one of the most attractive coastal retreats in Florida. Its white quartz sand beaches and crystal-clear waters are ideal for those seeking nature and tranquility.
4. Wailea Beach, Maui, Hawaii
This beach is part of a cluster of five beaches located in the Wailea resort complex. Its white coral sand and calm waters make it a prime spot for snorkeling, surrounded by tropical gardens and carefully preserved landscapes.
5. Main Beach, East Hampton, New York
Recognized for balancing nature and urban development, Main Beach is protected by conservation agreements dating back more than 300 years. Its large dunes and clean waters have made it one of the iconic beaches of the Hamptons.
6. Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park, Florida
This barrier island beach offers white sand, crystal-clear waters, and activities such as swimming, fishing, paddleboarding, and wildlife observation. It is common to find bald eagles, ospreys, and manatees in the area.
7. Beachwalker Park, Kiawah Island, South Carolina
Located south of Charleston, this beach is ideal for nature lovers. Visitors can explore tidal inlets by kayak or canoe and observe thousands of birds near Captain Sam's Inlet.
8. Kaunaoa, Big Island of Hawaii
Also known as Mauna Kea Beach, this beach stands out for its turquoise waters and white coral sand that contrasts with ancient black lava formations. Access is limited due to the scarcity of visitor parking.
9. Lanikai Beach, Oahu, Hawaii
Considered by Dr. Beach to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii, it boasts shallow, clear, and usually calm waters. Two small islands off the coast create one of the most photographed landscapes in the archipelago.
10. Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts
The last position in the ranking belongs to this Cape Cod beach, famous for its impressive views of dunes and glacial cliffs. Although the water is usually cold even in summer, it remains one of the most iconic coastal landscapes in New England.
