Classes for the basic level in Mexico have not yet started and there is already talk about when the first vacation period and the first long weekend of the 2026-2027 school year will be nationwide.
Do you have children in this educational level? If so, you should know that, as soon as they return to classes, there will be a mandatory day of rest, as established by the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) in its calendar, which although not an official long weekend, does represent a significant break in academic activities.
This refers to the suspension of classes for the celebration of the anniversary of the beginning of Mexico's Independence, which will be Wednesday, September 16, 2026. The calendar also marks Tuesday the 15th as a day of commemoration or "reflection," which means that classes will be held as normal, with the celebration of civic ceremonies regarding historical events without it being a mandatory day of rest.
In many cases, days of reflection like this are left to the discretion of each institution to be a day off or to shorten activities.

Afterward, the calendar indicates that basic education students will have a long weekend between Friday, September 25, Saturday the 26th, and Sunday the 27th due to the first Technical Council of the cycle.
When will the next vacation long weekend be, according to the SEP?
The SEP will suspend classes for a long holiday weekend on Monday, November 2, alluding to the celebration of Day of the Dead; this break will join the weekend and the suspension of activities for the School Technical Council, held on the last Friday of each month.
Essentially, the long weekend will start from Friday, October 30, Saturday the 31st, Sunday the 1st, and Monday, November 2.
But this long holiday weekend will not be the only one in November; after that, there will be a second long weekend for the celebration of the anniversary of the Mexican Revolution, which is November 20, but it will be moved to Monday.
It should be noted that the Federal Labor Law (LFT) moves certain commemorations to the Monday prior to the celebration to create long holiday weekends or long weekends to promote tourism and family coexistence, in addition to being a strategy to improve labor productivity.
When will the first vacation period be, according to the SEP?
Beyond the days of rest marked by the SEP and the LFT, the first official vacation period on the calendar will be the winter or Christmas holidays; these will begin on Monday, December 21, and will conclude on January 6.
