Canada has already defined which professional profiles will have the greatest opportunities to obtain permanent residency. Through changes in the Express Entry system, the government seeks to attract specialized talent that helps fill vacancies in strategic sectors, boost economic growth, and respond to urgent labor market needs.
The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada, Lena Metlege Diab, announced that the country will continue the priority selection of candidates with experience in areas where there is a high demand for workers.
Among them, healthcare and social assistance services stand out, so nurses, dentists, pharmacists, psychologists, and other healthcare professionals will continue to be among the most sought-after profiles. Likewise, the government will continue to favor workers in specialized trades such as carpenters, plumbers, and machinists, who are considered essential to support home construction and infrastructure projects.
STEM professions and French speakers will continue to have an advantage
Canada will also maintain its focus on careers related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Engineers, specialists in cybersecurity and other professionals linked to technological innovation will have greater possibilities within the Express Entry invitation rounds.
As Diab explained, "the economy of the future will be driven by innovation and technologies like artificial intelligence," which is why the country seeks to strengthen these sectors with highly qualified international talent.
In addition, the government will continue to prioritize candidates with a strong command of French, as part of its strategy to increase Francophone immigration outside of Quebec.
The goal is to strengthen Francophone communities in different regions of the country and cover labor needs in areas such as education, healthcare, and entrepreneurship.
New Express Entry categories for 2026
Among the main novelties for 2026 is the creation of new specific categories within Express Entry. Canada will open the door to researchers and senior executives with Canadian work experience, recognizing that these profiles can contribute to the country's economic, scientific, and technological development.
Categories for workers in the transport sector will also be incorporated, including pilots, aircraft mechanics, and inspectors, occupations that the government considers fundamental to strengthening supply chains, trade, and the mobility of goods nationally and internationally.
Doctors, military personnel, and strategic talent will be in the spotlight
Another priority will be to attract qualified military recruits with job offers from the Canadian Armed Forces, including doctors, nurses, and pilots. This is in addition to a specific category for foreign doctors with work experience in Canada, with the aim of facilitating their stay in the country and improving access to healthcare services.
The minister made it clear that the strategy consists of actively seeking the workers that Canada needs. "We don't wait for the right people to find us.
We go out into the world to recruit the people our country needs," she affirmed. With these changes, Canada seeks to balance its immigration system while opening opportunities for professionals and specialized workers who can contribute to economic growth and the development of their communities.
