Following the discovery of an elderly woman abandoned in a wheelchair on a highway in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, state authorities are requesting help to determine her identity and locate her relatives.
A video went viral on social media showing a Red Cross paramedic team responding this Thursday to reports of a woman approximately 90 years old who was found alone and unconscious, exposed to the elements.
She allegedly showed signs of hypothermia and was transported by ambulance to the local General Hospital, where she was diagnosed with severe malnutrition.
The Office of the Defense of the Elderly, through the National System for Integral Family Development (DIF) of Tamaulipas, issued a notice to assist in the search for the elderly woman's relatives.
This case has sparked outrage on social media due to the family's lack of care. The abandonment is being condemned as an act of cruelty, and there are demands for an investigation to find those responsible.
Local media reported that authorities have contacted their counterparts in Texas to see if there were any reports of a woman with similar characteristics to the one found in Matamoros.
This follows the observation that the clothing she is wearing is similar to that provided by hospitals adjacent to the neighboring state.
It is unknown how long she had been at that location.
The elderly woman is allegedly still being treated by medical staff, while efforts continue to identify her and determine how she ended up in her wheelchair on the side of a highway.
