Authorities in Mexico City reported the death of 4 people during the celebrations for Mexico's victory against Ecuador in the 2026 World Cup, which led to massive gatherings on Paseo de la Reforma and the capital's Zócalo.
In a press conference, the head of the Ministry of Health, Nadim Gasman, detailed that three of the deaths occurred due to asphyxiation in the vicinity of Paseo de la Reforma and correspond to a 44-year-old man, a 19-year-old woman, and a 48-year-old woman.
Regarding the fourth deceased person, she said that it is a 30-year-old male whose identity is still unknown, who died after suffering an epileptic status, convulsive crisis, and gastrointestinal bleeding; after being transported to the hospital, he suffered respiratory arrest.
The official mentioned that 1,615 medical attentions were carried out for situations such as sprains, alcohol poisoning, fractures, anxiety attacks, and other incidents derived from the crowds. She detailed that, of the total number of people assisted, 28 had to be taken to hospitals.
Mexico's victory against Ecuador triggered massive celebrations in the country's capital, especially on Reforma and the Angel of Independence, traditional meeting points for fans.
