Voting machines in Westchester County, north of New York City, stopped accepting ballots on Tuesday, a failure that forced the use of sealed bags to preserve votes and could delay the results of one of the key contests for control of the House of Representatives.

Part of Westchester is in New York's 17th district, where Republican Mike Lawler is seeking reelection against Democrat Cait Conley, in a House currently held by Republicans.

County Executive Ken Jenkins apologized to voters on behalf of the Westchester Board of Elections (BOE) and asked them to remain in line, be patient, and, above all, cast their vote.

Furthermore, he assured voters that measures are being taken to resolve the problem as quickly as possible and that their vote will be counted.

Jenkins, who demanded an investigation into what happened, reported that he had instructed county officials, including representatives from the legal department, to oversee the election process and ensure that voters could exercise their right without interference and that all votes were counted correctly, according to the newspaper Gothamist.

The Board of Elections initially reported that an issue with the thickness of the paper was preventing the machines from accepting ballots, but it later updated its statement and removed that reference, according to the same outlet.

The situation caused distrust in some voters like Karina de la Rosa, who learned of the problem when she was asked to place her ballot in the bag.

"We're already hearing that the Republicans, you know, want to interfere in what's happening right now because there's going to be a blue tsunami, or so they say," she commented to the newspaper.

State Attorney General Letitia James is aware of the situation and also asked voters not to be discouraged.

"Polls are open and your vote will still be valid. The Board of Elections is working to fix technical issues with ballot scanners in some polling sites, and my office is monitoring the situation," she stated on the social network X.

Westchester County will decide today whether to reelect Republican Congressman Mike Lawler or give their vote to Democrat Cait Conley, an election that could be important for control of the House of Representatives, which is currently in Republican hands.
