United States confirms weapons in space against hostile actions: what is known

The United States has weapons deployed in space, the national Space Force reported this Monday.

It is the first time that the presence of these types of capabilities in orbit has been confirmed.

"The United States has space control weapons in orbit capable of defending the Joint Force against hostile actions from adversaries," said a Space Force spokesperson in a statement that did not offer details about the weapons.

These weapons allow for "contesting and controlling" space and "affecting adversary capabilities," the statement noted. "These capabilities can be used for both offensive and defensive purposes," it indicated.

Both Russia and China—the two main geopolitical rivals of the United States—represent potential threats to American interests in space.
