The President of the United States, stated this Wednesday that he does not believe the new Democratic majority in Congress will push for an impeachment against him because, in his opinion, it would "destroy" the Democratic Party.

"I think it would destroy the Democratic Party if they did it. Because, an impeachment for no reason? Why? For having a successful country? Our country is now more successful than at any other time in its history," he declared in response to questions from the press at the White House.

Expectations regarding a possible impeachment of the president rose after Democrats seized both chambers of Congress from the Republicans in a crushing victory that yielded significant gains, even in states considered strongholds of Trump's party.

Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic leader in the House of Representatives who is seen as the likely Speaker of the House when the new majority takes office next January, has so far refused to commit to pushing for a new process against the president.

Last April, he told Fox News that it was not an immediate priority, and later in September, he told ABC News that the Democrats "have not ruled anything out, but they haven't taken anything for granted either."

The Democratic-led House of Representatives approved two articles of impeachment against the Republican president during his first term (2017-2021), efforts that did not prosper in the Senate.

Jeffries, who could become the first African American to assume leadership of the House of Representatives, was part of the team of lawmakers who argued the case for the president's first impeachment before the Upper Chamber in 2020.
