An American tourist who was gored and tossed into the air by a at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming is recovering from his injuries after undergoing surgery.

The man was identified as 65-year-old Carl Isom-McDaniel, a Washington resident who was traveling with his grandson.

The man suffered multiple fractures during the encounter with the animal, which tossed him like a rag doll at a campsite near Yellowstone Lake, according to a report from the Cascadia Daily News.

A video of the attack, captured by photographer Mike MacLeod, shows the agitated animal rolling in the dirt next to a campground path.

MacLeod told The New York Times that when the bison got up from the dirt, it was bucking like a rodeo horse and was "clearly very agitated."

At that moment, Isom-McDaniel and his grandson, who were passing through, stopped to take photos of the animal.

Initially, the bison is seen heading toward a truck passing near the two, but once the vehicle moved on, the bison began to chase the grandfather and grandson through a pine forest.

The grandson managed to run away, but the bison caught the grandfather, hooking him with a horn near the hip before tossing him into the air, as shown in the footage.

"I knew he was in danger because the bison wasn't leaving. It stayed right on top of Carl and was really furious. It was bobbing its head and showing all that aggressive behavior," MacLeod explained to the New York newspaper.

Eventually, the photographer and other campers scared off the animal and assisted the injured man.

The man was conscious and in good spirits, despite the intense pain, the Cascadia Daily News noted.
