With prayers and praise for Donald Trump, whom the leader of the Republican National Committee, Joe Gruters, described as the "best president in the history of the United States," the party in power kicked off an unusual national convention this Wednesday, less than two months before the crucial midterm elections.
In Dallas, one of the economic centers of Texas, hundreds of militants, legislators, and party candidates gathered to celebrate a convention that will be focused on praising the policies of the Trump Administration and with which they hope to motivate their base to support Republican candidates at the polls in what is shaping up to be a tight race to retain control of Congress.
"This is historic," noted the chairman of the Republican National Committee, the organization that oversees the party, during an opening speech: "We are ready to continue with the common sense conservative revolution," he asserted.
Amid applause and without losing the energizing tone of his speech, Gruters acknowledged the elephant in the room: the difficult race his party faces to maintain the majority in the legislature and continue to give free rein to the president's agenda.
The latest polls project a Democratic victory for control of the House and a 50/50 probability for a majority in the Senate, as indicated this Tuesday by the polling aggregator Decision Desk HQ.
"If they gain control of even one of the two Chambers, our agenda comes to a halt. We will not let that happen," the Republican leader indicated.
Pastor Jack Graham, who is part of a White House commission for religious freedom, delivered an opening prayer for the convention, in which, standing before an image of a sunset, he asked for a "spiritual rebirth" and a "spiritual revolution" in the US.
"We ask You, God, for our president Donald J. Trump; give him the strength and the protection so that he may continue leading our great nation," declared Graham.
Both Trump and his vice president, JD Vance, will give speeches at the convention, which will also feature Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Attorney General Todd Blanche.
The agenda will address topics such as the Government's immigration offensive, tax cuts, and healthcare initiatives.
The Republican convention is being held at the American Airlines Center in downtown Dallas through Thursday night, the day on which there will also be a tribute to the late and controversial ultraconservative activist Charlie Kirk, on the anniversary of his murder. EFE
