Six passengers lost their lives after becoming trapped on board a public transport vehicle that stopped in the middle of a severe flood recorded between Sunday and this Monday in the metropolitan area of the State of Mexico (center).
According to local media reports, the accumulated water reached the system of the vehicle, which was adapted to run on gas, causing a mechanical failure and a direct fuel leak into the passenger cabin.
Three of the victims died of intoxication inside the unit as they were unable to open the doors in time, while the remaining three passengers collapsed a few meters from the vehicle after having managed to get out in a desperate attempt to reach safety.
The tragedy occurred in the town of Bosques de Tultitlán, on one of the main roadways, due to the intense torrential rains that battered the central region of the country and caused serious flooding.
So far, authorities from the State of Mexico government have not issued an official statement regarding the definitive causes of the incident or potential administrative sanctions for the transport line involved.
Emergency service personnel and police officers arrived at the scene to cordon off the perimeter, while forensic staff carried out the removal of the bodies of four men and two women.
State authorities have opened an investigation to determine responsibilities regarding the lack of maintenance of the public transport vehicle and the failures in the road drainage system. EFE
