Russia will use all means at its disposal, including its nuclear weapons, if Western countries attempt to blockade the Kaliningrad enclave, located between Poland and Lithuania, Russian diplomatic sources warned.
According to a statement from the Russian embassy in Ireland, "NATO is preparing an air and maritime blockade of Kaliningrad," something that Putin's government will try to avoid with all weapons at its disposal, as it warned in a diplomatic note sent to the Atlantic Alliance.
"This is not a hoax, but a matter of great concern for Russia. The irresponsible and short-sighted European political elite is playing a dangerous game," stated the diplomatic mission, whose comments were reported by the TASS agency.
The note adds that there should be no doubt that "Russia will be prepared to use its entire arsenal, including nuclear weapons, to defend its territory if NATO countries attempt to isolate the Kaliningrad region from the rest of the country."
Likewise, it is pointed out that Moscow could launch "preventive strikes against decision-making centers in Alliance countries at an early stage of the conflict."
Regarding this matter, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Wednesday that Moscow is taking note of the statements coming from European capitals regarding plans to blockade Kaliningrad.
"We have heard repeatedly," he said in a press conference, "statements from Poland and other European countries, quite outrageous statements that also alluded to the issue of Kaliningrad."
He also recalled that a nuclear response to attempts to blockade a Russian territory is contemplated in Russian law: "It is perfectly logical for our diplomats to try to remind the 'hotheads' in Europe of our guidelines on this matter," he said.
