The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed this Sunday that the Government of Mexico, which she leads, aspires to maintain a "good relationship" with the administration of United States President Donald Trump, such as the one maintained during his first term (2017-2021) with former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), but that it will be one of "cooperation and not subordination."
During her tour of the country to give an account of the two years of her government, which will be completed on October 1, Sheinbaum spoke about the bilateral relationship with her neighbor to the north from the city of Monterrey, capital of the State of Nuevo León, which borders the United States.
In her speech, Sheinbaum recalled that "there have been very special moments in the relationship between Mexico and the United States" with presidents Benito Juárez and Abraham Lincoln, between Lázaro Cárdenas and Franklin Roosevelt, and with López Obrador and Trump.
"In President Trump's first term, there was a very good relationship with President López Obrador. And that is what we aspire to, a good relationship with our neighbor to the north. That said, cooperation always, subordination never," Sheinbaum told her audience at the event held at the Explanada de los Héroes, known as the Macroplaza, in Monterrey.
"That is the essence of the Mexican people. And we always remember it, but particularly now, as (September) is the month of the homeland," the president added.
On the night of September 15 to 16, 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo began the armed uprising to proclaim independence from Spain, a historic date for the country.
On September 1, during her second government report, Sheinbaum assured that, although the relationship with Washington has had “its difficulties,” she trusts in reaching an “understanding” regarding security and trade, as both nations advance in the review of the North American trade agreement (USMCA).
“The relationship with the United States government has had its difficulties, but we have made the decision to always seek an understanding,” she declared without explicitly mentioning President Trump.
Sheinbaum highlighted the collaboration agreements reached with the United States, based on the principles of “respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, shared and differentiated responsibility, mutual respect and trust, and cooperation without subordination.”
“Cooperation does not mean submission. Friendship does not mean renouncing our principles. As long as I have the honor of serving as President of the Republic, I will firmly defend our sovereignty, our dignity, and our independence,” she added.
Washington has increased pressure on Mexico in the fight against drug trafficking, especially after the accusation of ties to organized crime against the governor on leave of Sinaloa (west), the ruling party member Rubén Rocha Moya, and nine other high-ranking officials of the state, something that Sheinbaum has rejected, considering that sufficient evidence has not been provided.
