Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Monday a reinforcement of the security operation in Morelos after describing as "very regrettable and sad" the murder of two high school students from the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM), fifteen days after the femicide of the Spaniard Claudia Tacoronte, who was on an academic exchange in that same state in central Mexico.
During her morning press conference, the president explained that she instructed the head of the Interior Ministry, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, to establish immediate communication with the state governor, Margarita González Saravia, as well as with university authorities and the student community.
"I asked the Interior Ministry today to get in touch with the governor and the university rector regarding the very, very regrettable and sad case of the students who have lost their lives, because there have already been several," Sheinbaum declared to the media.
The statements come after violence struck the student community of Morelos once again this Sunday with the fatal shooting of two high school students in Cuernavaca, the state capital, just fifteen days after the femicide of the young Spanish student.
The two teenagers were students at Preparatory School Number 2 of the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM), the same one where Tacoronte studied, and they died on Saturday night during an armed attack in the Chulavista neighborhood, while a third young man was wounded.
Sheinbaum emphasized that the priority of the dialogue will be to assess the risk situation and coordinate greater crime prevention actions aimed at protecting the youth of the academic institution.
The university community had already staged protests and a prolonged strike this year over the femicides of Kimberly Joselin Ramos Beltrán and Karol Toledo Gómez, two 18-year-old students murdered just days apart between February and March.
In the same vein, Sheinbaum gave instructions to the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, to intervene in the capital, Cuernavaca, in order to curb the increase in common crimes, such as robberies against pedestrians and businesses.
