Trump surprises with message about Cuba: “Pay attention to what Rubio is going to do”

United States President Donald Trump emphasized this Wednesday that it is worth paying attention to what Secretary of State Marco Rubio plans to do with Cuba at a time of increasing financial pressure from Washington on the island, with which dialogue seems to remain on hold.

During an event at the White House to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States, Trump invited Rubio to join him on stage.

"Pay attention to what he is going to do with Cuba," said Trump, before yielding the floor to Rubio in front of an audience that included representatives of the Hispanic community in the North American country.

"I would say that, as Hispanic Americans, we are Americans. We love this country. We love it because many of us know, whether through our own experience or through our parents or grandparents, what life is like in other places, and that is why we know how special this country is," Rubio asserted in his brief speech.

The deep energy crisis that Cuba has been experiencing since mid-2024 has worsened since January due to the oil embargo applied by the U.S., after Washington captured former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro.

Since then, it has activated a series of "maximum pressure" measures against individuals and entities related to the Cuban government or operating in key sectors of the island, such as energy, defense, finance, and mining, to which repeated hints and rumors about a possible future U.S. intervention on the island must be added.
