The man, identified by Italian media as a tourist from Texas in his 30s, was struck on Sunday and transported by a firefighter helicopter to a hospital in Catania, but was pronounced dead upon arrival, the fire service spokesperson indicated.
According to press reports, the man was hiking in an area of the volcano where access is prohibited when he was caught in a storm.
HOW TALL IS MOUNT ETNA? IS IT THE TALLEST VOLCANO IN EUROPE?
At 3,324 meters high, Etna is the tallest active volcano in Europe and erupts frequently.
Etna has been spewing ash and lava for days, attracting crowds of visitors eager to see the spectacular lava flows up close, and forcing the closure of the nearby Catania airport, a key gateway for tourists visiting the island of Sicily.
