Canadian voice actor Peter Cullen, known for bringing the heroic Optimus Prime to life in the movies, series, and video games of the 'Transformers' franchise, has passed away at 85.
Cullen died on Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles, as confirmed this Thursday by his agent, Kevin Motley, to The Hollywood Reporter magazine.
The performer was surrounded by his family, according to a statement released by his family, in which they refrained from revealing the causes of his death.
Born in Montreal (Canada), his most distinctive role was that of Optimus Prime in various 'Transformers' series, movies, and video games.
Cullen was the first to provide his English voice to the leader of the Autobots in the animated series that ran from 1984 to 1987.
The death of Optimus Prime after a duel with the titanic Megatron in the 1986 film caused such an uproar among fans of the franchise that it led producers to bring the character and Cullen back for the 1987 film 'Transformers: The Return of Optimus Prime'.
Two decades later, he returned to voice his beloved character when director Michael Bay revived the franchise for the big screen in 2007.
Beyond Optimus Prime, the character that brought him fame, his voice embodied characters like Eeyore, the gloomy donkey from Winnie the Pooh, or the evil KARR in the 1980s American television series 'Knight Rider'.
