Charles Spencer, brother of Princess Diana, claims in his new memoir that Queen Elizabeth II had a reaction of apparent irritation when she received the first news of Lady Di's car accident in Paris, which occurred on August 31, 1997.
According to the account included in his memoir Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, the monarch reportedly asked, “What is she up to now?” before knowing the true severity of what had happened. Spencer emphasizes that this reaction occurred when it was not yet known that the accident would end in the princess's death.

The revelation appears in Charles Spencer's memoir, published on September 22, 2026, nearly three decades after Diana's death, and which will arrive in Mexico this weekend.
In the book, the princess's brother describes that Elizabeth II had responded in an “irritated” manner upon initially hearing that her former daughter-in-law had suffered a car accident in France. Count Spencer himself clarifies that these were the first reports and that “the severity of it all” was not yet clear.

“When the Queen heard that Diana had been in a car accident, she asked with irritation: 'What is she up to now?'. This was before the gravity of it all was understood,” he noted.
Princess Diana's accident occurred shortly before midnight on August 30, 1997, when the car in which she was traveling crashed in the Place de l'Alma underpass in Paris.
At the time, it was said that the princess had been taken to the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery for approximately two hours before being pronounced dead at 3:00 a.m. British time on August 31.
There were four people in the vehicle. Dodi Fayed, Diana's companion and rumored romantic partner, and the driver, Henri Paul, died in the accident, while the bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones survived with serious injuries.
Diana also initially survived the impact, but her condition deteriorated and she subsequently died in the hospital. Official information provided by the royal family confirmed that the car was traveling at high speed when the crash occurred in the Parisian tunnel.
Diana's death occurred a little over a year after her divorce from the then-Prince Charles, finalized in August 1996, and following a summer in which her relationship with Dodi Fayed had dominated international headlines.
On the night of the tragedy, Diana and her companions left the Ritz Paris Hotel where they were staying; the car they were traveling in was pursued by photographers before crashing in the Place de l'Alma tunnel.
