Javier "El Vasco" Aguirre bid farewell to the Mexican national team on Sunday after being eliminated in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup following a 3-2 loss to England at the Azteca Stadium.
"The dream ends here," said the 67-year-old coach, who leaves the helm of 'El Tri' to his successor Rafael Márquez. "He is more than capable," Aguirre noted during a press conference.
Regarding the future of the Mexican national team, Aguirre said that Márquez "is strong and has a strong foundation."
After the defeat against the English squad, Aguirre reiterated that this elimination of Mexico marks the end of his third stint as the Mexican national team coach.
"It is my last match with the Mexican national team and the last at the Azteca Stadium. I would have liked to say goodbye to my people with a victory," he stated.
Aguirre lamented not being able to play the "perfect match" that was needed to defeat England.
"You cannot make mistakes, and today we made three and we paid dearly for it," the Mexican coach pointed out. "They did not make mistakes like we did, and that shows you why they are fourth in the world and we are ninth" in the FIFA rankings.
Despite the elimination, Aguirre commented that he felt "proud and satisfied with the work done." He also thanked his players: "The 26 of them made me very happy."
"I gave all the players and Rafa a hug, and I am at his disposal," Aguirre concluded.
