Following Argentina's victory over England in the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup, fans from both countries engaged in an intense debate on social media. The controversy grew when a host from the channel GB News claimed that, due to the South American country's economic crisis, "all Argentines have left is football."
Below, we tell you what the presenter said and how users reacted on social media.
¿Qué dijo el conductor de GB News sobre Argentina?
A video from the GB News channel went viral on TikTok, in which the presenters were commenting on the celebrations of the Argentine fans after securing their spot in the 2026 World Cup final. However, what sparked the controversy were the host's statements, who claimed that Argentines face a high unemployment rate and that "all they have left is football."
"The thing is this: when you have youth unemployment as high as it is in Argentina, when you've had triple-digit inflation, when you've been through so many hardships, I mean, football is the only thing they have," said the presenter.
He later added:
"I like to think we have other things in our lives, but when you see those victory parades through the city center and all that, you think: 'Yes, of course they can have big victory parades, none of these people have jobs.' I mean, literally, the only thing they have in their lives is football. I like to think that in Great Britain we also have other things to celebrate."
