Atlético Dallas of the USL Championship, a professional league considered the second tier of American soccer, announced this Monday the signing of Mexican player who had been without a team since leaving Guadalajara at the end of 2025.

'Chicharito', 38, will sign for two seasons, with an option for a third, as reported by Atlético Dallas in a statement.

"I believe Dallas deserves a club that reflects its passion for soccer, its diversity, and its future. I want to contribute to creating a winning culture, inspire young players across North Texas, and provide our fans with a team they can believe in from the very beginning. I didn't come here just to finish my career. I came to help build the future of soccer in Dallas," said the forward.

'Chicharito' is the first signing in the history of the newly formed Texas franchise, which will officially debut in 2027 and will play its home games at the Cotton Bowl, a stadium with a capacity of more than 91,000 spectators.

The top scorer in the history of the Mexican national team, with 52 goals, ended his contract with Guadalajara last December and had not joined another team since. During the last World Cup, he worked as a sports commentator.

This will not be 'Chicharito's' first experience in the United States, as he played for the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer (MLS) between 2020 and 2023.

The addition of the forward, formerly of Manchester United and Real Madrid, among other teams, provides a name with vast stature to Atlético Dallas and the USL, which aims to compete with the MLS starting in 2028.

To do so, it will bet on a structural transformation of the competition, establishing a system of promotion and relegation unprecedented in elite sports in the United States, and encouraging the arrival of new franchises.
