Barcelona player Dani Olmo said regarding the aggression he suffered from Roberto Fabián Ayala, a member of the Argentine coaching staff, at the end of the last World Cup final, that he "is lying" and therefore there is "no need" for him to apologize.
He stated this in remarks to the 'Diari de Terrassa', his hometown newspaper.
Olmo pointed out that if someone claims, in reference to Ayala, that he is sorry, but then justifies a punch by stating it was in response to something said to him, then "he surely isn't sorry," because "he is lying."
"I didn't say anything to him, so I don't need him to apologize. What truly defines us is not the mistake, but the courage to accept it with humility, truth, and dignity," he emphasized.
Asked about the importance of soccer protagonists being an example for everyone, Olmo said that when his children, his family, the fans, and the people of Terrassa watch the game, he wants them to be proud of how they compete, how they win, but above all, of their behavior on the pitch.
"The importance of soccer makes us players an example for children and new generations, and that entails a great responsibility. But thank God, what is really important is that we have experienced an incredible World Cup, that the world has seen it, and that we are world champions after a lot of hard work," he stated.
