Traveling by plane involves complying with a series of safety rules, especially when it comes to carry-on luggage. Not knowing these restrictions can cause delays, additional inspections, or even force you to part with some of your items before boarding.
If you are departing from the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) or any other airport in Mexico or the United States, it is advisable to check what items are prohibited to avoid surprises at security checkpoints.
What is considered carry-on luggage?
Carry-on luggage is what you can take with you into the airplane cabin. It is generally a small carry-on suitcase or a backpack that meets the dimensions and weight allowed by the airline.
Within this luggage, there are specific restrictions regarding liquids, tools, weapons, and other items that could pose a risk to the safety of passengers and the aircraft.
1. Liquids greater than 100 milliliters
One of the most common mistakes among travelers is trying to pass bottles or containers with liquids exceeding 100 milliliters (3.4 ounces).
To transport them in your carry-on luggage, you must meet these conditions:
Each container must contain a maximum of 100 ml.
All containers must be placed inside a clear, resealable plastic bag.
The bag must not exceed approximately 20 x 20 centimeters.
This applies to items such as:
- Shampoo
- Perfumes
- Cremas
- Gel para cabello
- Pasta dental
- Lociones
- Bebidas
If you are carrying a larger container, even if it is partially empty, security authorities could remove it.
2. Firearms and objects that fire projectiles
It is completely prohibited to transport firearms in carry-on luggage.
Restricted items include:
- Pistolas
- Rifles
- Escopetas
- Réplicas de armas
- Pistolas de aire comprimido
- Arcos y flechas
- Ballestas
- Hondas
- Pistolas para bengalas
- Dispositivos paralizantes
These items may be confiscated or require special procedures to be checked in the hold, depending on the applicable rules.
3. Sharp objects
Security checkpoints also restrict objects capable of piercing or cutting.
Some examples are:
- Navajas
- Cuchillos
- Cuchillas de afeitar
- Hachas
- Espadas
- Sables
- Tijeras de gran tamaño
- Equipos de artes marciales con puntas
If you are carrying any of these items in your carry-on suitcase, you will likely be asked to remove them before boarding.
4. Work tools
Many people are unaware that certain tools are also prohibited in the cabin because they could be used to cause injury or damage parts of the aircraft.
These include:
- Taladros
- Destornilladores
- Sierras
- Palancas
- Sopletes
- Pistolas de clavos
- Pistolas de pernos
If you need to travel with these types of tools, you must check the requirements for transporting them in checked luggage.
5. Blunt objects
It is also not permitted to carry objects that could be used to strike other people.
The list includes:
- Bates de béisbol
- Bates de softbol
- Porras
- Cachiporras
- Clavas
- Equipos de artes marciales
Although they may seem like sports or recreational items, authorities consider them potentially dangerous inside the cabin.
6. Explosives and flammable materials
Restrictions are especially strict regarding explosive or incendiary substances.
Among the prohibited items are:
- Fuegos artificiales
- Granadas
- Detonadores
- Minas
- Pólvora
- Dinamita
- Cartuchos fumígenos
Attempting to transport any of these materials can lead to sanctions and serious legal problems.
7. Chemical or toxic substances
It is also prohibited to carry products that pose chemical or biological risks to passengers.
For example:
- Ácidos
- Sustancias corrosivas
- Cloro
- Mercurio
- Álcalis
- Aerosoles incapacitantes
These products are considered dangerous and cannot enter the airplane cabin.
What can you take in your carry-on luggage?
Unlike the items above, it is possible to carry various electronic devices such as:
- Laptops
- Smartphones
- Tablets
- Cámaras fotográficas
- Cargadores
- Audífonos
- Comida sólida
However, it is advisable to check the airline's specific policies regarding batteries and electronic devices.
There is an exception for some products purchased after passing security checkpoints at the airport's duty-free shops.
Perfumes, alcoholic beverages, and other liquids can be transported as long as they exceed 100 ml, provided they remain sealed according to airport regulations.
However, if your trip includes layovers or connections, you could once again be subject to liquid restrictions upon entering a new security zone, so it is worth checking the rules before buying.
Before packing, carefully check the contents of your carry-on luggage and your personal item. A simple oversight, such as carrying a large bottle of shampoo or a forgotten tool in a backpack, can cause you to lose time at security checkpoints or force you to discard your belongings at the airport. Planning ahead will help you start your trip without setbacks.
