A video that has gone viral on social media shows the moment agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested workers at a Mexican restaurant in Minnesota where the officers had previously eaten, according to a local media report.
The controversy arises because, according to testimonies, several agents stopped for lunch at the restaurant known as El Tapatio, only to return hours later to arrest and take away people who worked at the site. The Minnesota Star Tribune reported that the events took place in Willmar, Minnesota, on January 15.
A witness told the aforementioned outlet that four ICE agents sat down to eat at the El Tapatio restaurant shortly before 3:00 p.m.; the staff was frightened but served the officers. The arrest took place around 8:30 p.m. as the agents followed the workers after they closed the restaurant.
Some passersby began blowing whistles and yelling at the ICE agents as they detained the workers, asking: 'Would your mom be proud of you right now?' As of now, it is unclear what the immigration status of the detainees was, or if the owners of the restaurant or the employees were among those arrested.
So far, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has not issued an official statement detailing the operation or justifying the tactics they used before proceeding with the arrests. The situation has reignited the global discussion regarding the ethics and legality of the methods ICE employs in its operations.
