The United States government announced this Wednesday that it is offering rewards totaling more than 100 million dollars for information leading to the capture of several leaders of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), a Mexican criminal organization designated as a terrorist group by the Donald Trump administration.

The State Department reported that, among the offers, it increased the reward from 20 to 25 million dollars for the arrest of Juan Carlos Valencia González, alias Pelón, successor to CJNG leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias El Mencho, who died in February during a Mexican military operation.

It is also offering up to 15 million dollars, each, for Audias Flores Silva, alias Jardinero; Gonzalo Mendoza Gaytán, alias Sapo; and Oseguera Cervantes' son-in-law, Julio Alberto Castillo Rodríguez, alias Chorro.

Additionally, up to 10 million dollars each for Ricardo Ruiz Velasco, alias Tripa; Julio César Montero Pinzón, alias El Tarjetas; and Carlos Andrés Rivera Varela, alias La Firma; and up to two million for Griselda Margarita Arredondo Pinzón.

Likewise, the State Department banned 65 people who are relatives or associates of individuals linked to the CJNG from entering the United States, 26 of whom had valid visas that were revoked.

The Trump administration has made the fight against drug trafficking a priority due to the fentanyl crisis in the United States, which has recorded record numbers of deaths from overdoses of this synthetic opioid in recent years.

Trump designated the main drug cartels as terrorist groups and has threatened to carry out attacks against them within Mexican territory, a possibility that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum categorically rejects, considering that it would violate the country's sovereignty.

On February 22, amid pressure from Washington, the Mexican Army killed El Mencho during an operation in Jalisco, one of the main criminals wanted by the United States, who died from gunshot wounds.
