The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has clarified a new turn in the investigation into an outbreak of related to shredded iceberg lettuce from Mexico: a sample that had tested positive during an import review turned out to be a false positive.

The agency reported that over the weekend it notified Taylor Farms about a positive test detected in a sample of shredded from Mexico. However, a corrective test performed subsequently confirmed that the initial result was incorrect.

Despite this finding, the FDA noted that the false positive does not change the ongoing investigation or the epidemiological data supporting the voluntary product recall carried out by Taylor Farms.

The FDA explained that its traceback investigations and data collected during the outbreak continue to point to shredded iceberg lettuce produced at Taylor Farms facilities located in central Mexico.

The agency indicated that it will continue working with federal and state authorities and health partners to determine the source of the multistate outbreak and ensure that potentially affected products are removed from the U.S. market.

"Protecting the American public remains our top priority," noted the FDA, which urged consumers to continue avoiding products included in the voluntary recall.
