Agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested two popular Cuban musicians in recent days, including percussionist Degnis Bofill, a Latin Grammy winner, and transferred them to detention centers.

Bofill was arrested on August 19 at Miami International Airport as he was returning from New York, according to his wife, Mara Delgado, who launched an online campaign to raise funds for his release and legal representation.
As of this Tuesday, she had raised 51,000 dollars.
Bofill worked on the album that won the 2022 Latin Grammy in the 'Best Folk Album' category, and he is currently at the Krome Service Processing Center located west of Miami, according to local media.
The percussionist arrived in the United States legally in 2023 and had a pending asylum application at the time of his arrest.
Immigration agents had arrested Cuban pianist Andy García Palacios a few days earlier, on August 15, at Los Angeles International Airport.
García Palacios is at the ICE processing center in Adelanto, California, according to official data.
Cuban musician Chucho Valdés lamented the "unfortunate news" on social media and expressed his wish that the pianist could return to his career as soon as possible, "given that he is one of the great representatives of the new generation of Cuban musicians."
U.S. authorities have increased the number of immigration arrests since the return of U.S. President Donald Trump to the White House in January 2025.
More than 51,000 migrants were arrested by ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) last July, the highest figure of Trump's second term.
