The 2026 in-person verification exams from UNAM began on August 12, and one applicant's case has caused outrage on social media.
The student is Brisa García, a 17-year-old indigenous Zapotec, who claims she achieved a perfect score on the admission exam for the Faculty of Medicine but was not summoned to take the in-person verification exam scheduled at the Oaxaca location.
Both she and her father are demanding that the National Autonomous University of Mexico explain the reason for the decision.

Brisa García went to the UNAM office in Oaxaca to request an explanation as to why she did not appear among those summoned to the in-person verification exam, despite her claim that she obtained a perfect result in the admission process.
In tears, the young woman stated that she was willing to take the assessment again to prove that she earned her spot legitimately.
"Let them tell me the reason why they won't let me take the exam that I am willing to perform to prove that I earned my place fairly," she declared.
The applicant also pointed out that the message received from the university was too general and that she was never informed of the specific reason why she could not take the test.
"They haven't told me anything. The message is very general. They do not explain the situation as to why I am not allowed to take the exam," she asserted.
Brisa recounted that she dedicated a full year of preparation to get into Medicine and there were even days when she sacrificed sleep to study.
"I prepared a year in advance. There were days when I wouldn't sleep and the next day I would go to school."

Brisa was accompanied by her father, Pablo García, from San Baltazar Guelavila, a Zapotec community in Oaxaca, who stated that they are only seeking a justified explanation from UNAM.
"We request a justified explanation. We want to know why they won't give my daughter the opportunity, nothing more," he expressed.
The father explained that, for him, the situation represents an infringement on his daughter's rights as an applicant.
"Definitely [it is an injustice]. Totally [an act of discrimination]. A violation of her rights as an applicant, including her human rights," he detailed.
Furthermore, he considered that it could be an act of discrimination due to her roots, although at the moment they do not have evidence to prove it.
"It could be some discrimination for belonging to an indigenous people or many other things, but we wouldn't be able to say exactly at this moment," he noted.
La UNAM responde al caso de Brisa García
Following Brisa García's public request, UNAM's Secretary of Social Communication, Mauricio López, informed the media that the university will meet with the applicant and her family to review her case.
The official explained that personnel from the General Directorate of School Administration (DGAE) will travel to Oaxaca to analyze what happened and provide a response to her request.
"Next week, the General Directorate of School Administration will be here to review her case. She will have an appointment to analyze the corresponding circumstances, and they will be given an answer to their requests," declared Mauricio López.
