A person armed with a sword burst into a high school in central Sweden this Friday and wounded several people before being detained by police, according to the local council of Fagersta.
"A person armed with a sword entered the Brinell school and injured several," the mayor's office explained, adding that police officers arrested the suspect.
The municipality did not specify the number of injured, but stated in a press release that police were continuing to search the school and that several other schools in the area had been placed on lockdown.
A press conference was initially scheduled for 5:00 PM local time, but the municipality announced it was being postponed, as "a rescue operation" in response to the incident was still ongoing.
The motive for the attack was not immediately clear.
The newspaper Aftonbladet reported that at least two people had been injured and that an armed individual had been shot in the leg by police.
Public broadcaster SVT reported that ambulances, patrol cars, and a police helicopter were outside the school—which has 447 students—in the small town of approximately 12,000 inhabitants.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stated to AFP in a written message that "a serious incident has taken place today at a school in Fagersta, just after the summer holidays."
"There are reports of people injured. We still do not know what is behind the attack, but we do know that the police are working extremely intensively," Kristersson indicated.
Magdalena Andersson, leader of the Social Democratic opposition, lamented the "terrible news" on X.
"When violence takes place in a school, I know it affects our entire country. All of Sweden is with Fagersta in this very difficult moment," she wrote.
