King Charles III and his wife Camilla received Prince Harry, his wife Meghan and their two children on Friday in London for the first time in four years, according to several British media outlets citing Buckingham Palace.
The meeting coincided with a trip by Prince Harry, who has been in England since Monday, as part of the preparations for the Invictus Games scheduled for 2027 in Birmingham (central England), an international sporting event he created for wounded or ill veterans.
According to the British news agency PA and other media, Meghan and her children Archie and Lilibet traveled to the United Kingdom from an unknown location in Europe and were received on Friday afternoon by the 77-year-old sovereign and his wife at Highgrove, Charles's personal residence in southwest England.
Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, had last seen their grandfather in person during the platinum jubilee celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.
The couple has lived in California since 2020, following their high-profile split from the royal family. Prince Harry, 41, has returned to the United Kingdom on several occasions.
The visit this week to his home country became a tangle. Several British media outlets, including the BBC and Sky News, had initially reported that Harry would be staying at Buckingham Palace, according to a source close to the prince.
Following that report, the same media outlets released a denial from the palace, which explained that Prince Harry had not accepted the invitation to stay at the British sovereign's official residence with sufficient notice.
Meghan, Archie and Lilibet were not initially going to travel, reportedly due to not receiving police protection.
Contacted by AFP, Buckingham Palace did not immediately react.
On Tuesday, in a firm ruling, the London High Court dismissed the lawsuit filed by King Charles's younger son and several public figures against the owner of the Daily Mail for invasion of privacy.
He will now face another court hearing on July 29 and 30, where he and the other six plaintiffs could be forced to pay significant legal costs.
Following his split from the royal family, Harry has said that he wants to reconcile with his father.
