Spider-Man beat the Avengers at the box office. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” broke the record held by “Avengers: Endgame” for the best opening weekend at the North American box office, grossing 360 million dollars in theaters across the United States and Canada, Sony Pictures reported on Monday.

Sony projected on Sunday that would gross around 355 million dollars in its opening weekend, where it was screened in 4,487 theaters, a figure that would have fallen short of the one set by “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019 with 357 million dollars. But the fourth Spider-Man film—starring Tom Holland—exceeded expectations.

Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, noted in a statement: “Records are made to be broken, but we will feel very proud of this one, for as long as we hold it.”

Before “Avengers: Endgame,” no film had surpassed 300 million dollars in its domestic opening weekend. Previous record holders were “Avengers: Infinity War,” which debuted with 257 million dollars in 2018, and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (247 million dollars in 2015).

In December 2021, during the pandemic, Holland's third film as Spider-Man, “No Way Home,” earned a spot on the list with a 260 million dollar debut, before grossing 1.9 billion dollars worldwide.

The combination of the high gross of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey,” which share actors Holland, and Jon Bernthal, also boosted an unprecedented weekend for movie theaters in the United States and Canada.

According to Rentrak, the domestic box office is up more than 15% compared to last year, with more than 6.2 billion dollars in ticket sales to date.
