The Spanish national team was proclaimed world champion for the second time in its history, 16 years after the first one, won in South Africa 2010, and strengthened the European dominance of the biggest competition on the planet, with five winners from that continent versus one from America in the last six editions of the tournament.
Spain's previous championship in 2010 was achieved with a 1-0 victory in the final against the Netherlands with the famous goal by Andrés Iniesta in extra time. This Sunday, they also won in extra time, through Ferran Torres.
The historical record is still led by Brazil, with five titles, one more than Germany and Italy, with four each. Brazil has not been world champion since the Japan and Korea 2002 edition. Argentina follows, with three. France and Uruguay have won two, while England and Spain have one. They are the only eight champions.
Regarding continents, Europe, with its thirteenth title, increases the gap with America, with nine, after winning five of the six most recent ones: Italy in Germany 2006, Spain in South Africa 2010, Germany in Brazil 2014, France in Russia 2018, and now Spain again in 2026. Only interrupted by Argentina, champion in 2022.
