U.S. President Donald Trump claimed this Monday that he watched the Mexico-England match, which ended in an English victory on Sunday, and said that striker Harry Kane is a person he likes "very much" and that "he is a great player."

"I watched the game last night between Mexico and England; and I had no reason to, but you couldn't take your eyes off the game. I don't know the players, although I think Kane is a great player. I have played golf with him and I like him a lot," the president declared from the White House before addressing the controversial reversed penalty given to U.S. national team striker Folarin Balogun.

The England national team defeated Mexico 3-2 on Sunday to qualify for the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup in a match where Jude Bellingham scored twice, and Harry Kane scored one of the goals from a penalty kick.

"If you think about it, every game is like a Super Bowl," he added.

The duel began with a one-hour delay due to bad weather, marked by a battle in the middle of the field and numerous fouls by Mexico, which sought to stifle its opponent.

Trump had already congratulated Kane after the victory against Mexico with a message on his Truth Social network: "Harry Kane, of England, is a great player!" the president wrote hours after the Bayern Munich striker scored one of the goals of the match.
