The Government of Canada announced a historic change in its immigration policy: citizens of Qatar no longer need a visa to enter Canada. The measure, announced by Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, took effect on November 25, 2025.
The elimination of the visa requirement for Qataris seeks to facilitate and streamline business or tourist travel, strengthening bilateral cooperation and promoting economic growth. According to Minister Diab, "this measure will boost tourism, investment, and trade ties," in addition to reflecting Canada's commitment to "safe immigration management."

¿Qué deben hacer los ciudadanos cataríes para viajar a Canadá?
Although a visa is no longer required, Qatari travelers must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) if they are entering by air.
To obtain it, they must:
- Visitar canada.ca/eTA.
- Tener a la mano tu pasaporte válido, tarjeta de crédito y correo electrónico.
- La mayoría de las solicitudes se aprueban en minutos.
Those who already have a valid Canadian visa may continue to use it until it expires or until their passport is no longer valid.
"This announcement adds to a solid diplomatic relationship spanning more than five decades. Both countries collaborate in strategic areas such as artificial intelligence, clean energy, agribusiness, and critical minerals," they note.
In 2024, bilateral trade reached 325 million Canadian dollars, and Canada received 9,000 Qatari visitors, an 11.5% increase compared to 2023.

Additionally, the Air Transport Agreement expanded in 2024 has allowed for more connections between both countries, strengthening trade and personal ties.
¿Y los mexicanos? ¿Necesitan visa para Canadá?
Yes. Mexican citizens must apply for a visitor visa to travel to Canada for tourism, shopping, or to visit family.
There are two exceptions for traveling with an eTA and without a visa:
Having held a Canadian visa within the last 10 years.
Holding a valid U.S. non-immigrant visa (for example, B1/B2).
Keep in mind that eTA only applies to air travel. If you enter by land or sea, you need a visa.
The cost of the Canadian visa is $100 CAD, plus $85 CAD for biometrics. It is valid for 10 years and allows stays of up to 6 months per entry.
With this measure, Canada strengthens its openness toward Qatar, fostering tourism and business. For Mexicans, the visa requirement remains in effect, except for the aforementioned exceptions, who require an eTA.
