The 'January slump' affects everyone, but there is good news for certain groups: they will be able to process their Mexican passport with a 50% discount in 2026. This benefit is granted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) and applies to both the initial issuance and the renewal of the document.
¿Quiénes pueden obtener el descuento?
The SRE states that only the following people are eligible for the 50% discount:
- Personas con discapacidad.
- Adultos mayores de 60 años.
- Trabajadores agrícolas que viajan a Canadá.
There is no other way to access this promotion.
Costos del pasaporte en 2025 (referencia para 2026)
Although the prices for 2026 have not yet been revealed, an increase is expected compared to the 2025 costs:
- 3 años: $1,730 pesos
- 6 años: $2,350 pesos
- 10 años: $4,120 pesos
With the 50% discount, the prices were:
- 3 años: $865 pesos
- 6 años: $1,175 pesos
- 10 años: $2,060 pesos
For agricultural workers, the discount only applies to 3 and 6-year passports.
Documentos necesarios para el descuento del 50%
It is not enough to just request the discount; you must prove your eligibility with official documents:
Personas con discapacidad
Original medical certificate or statement issued by a public health or social security institution.
National credential for people with disabilities (original and copy), issued by the DIF.
Trabajadores agrícolas
Original employment certificate issued by the National Employment Service of the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare.
Adultos mayores (60+)
- Presentar uno de los siguientes:
- Credencial de elector (INE).
- Credencial del INAPAM.
- Acta de nacimiento.

Requisitos simplificados en 2026
The SRE simplified the process to process the passport. The basic requirements will be:
First time: application form, payment receipt, and official identification.
Renewal: application form, payment receipt, and previous passport.
Minors: forms and authorization, presence of parents/guardians and the minor, identification, and payment receipt.
In case of not being able to verify nationality in the databases, a birth certificate, nationality certificate, or naturalization letter will be requested.
