The countdown is almost over for millions of students and their families in Mexico. Following the break for the holiday season, the return to classrooms now has an official date and comes with adjustments for the activities of teachers and administrators, in accordance with the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) calendar.
According to the educational authority, the return to classes for preschool, primary, and secondary school students will be Monday, January 12, 2026, exactly one week after the Three Kings Day celebration.

This day officially marks the beginning of the second semester of the 2025-2026 school year in public basic education schools.
However, the return will not be the same for everyone. School administrators will return earlier, specifically on Wednesday, January 7, for the intensive workshop for management personnel, while teachers will return on Thursday, January 8, to participate in their respective intensive workshop.

This workshop, the SEP explained, aims to reflect on the reality of each school community, recognize the characteristics of the environment, and strengthen educational advice and support, all focused on the continuous improvement of schools.
¿Cuándo serán las siguientes vacaciones?
For those already looking forward to the first break of the year, it will be only for basic education students and will occur on Friday, January 30, 2026, due to the School Technical Council (CTE) session, which takes place on the last Friday of each month.
Said suspension of school activities will join the first long weekend of the year, which will be in observance of the anniversary of the promulgation of the Mexican Constitution of February 5, 1917.
The official calendar indicates that the long weekend will be moved to Monday, February 2.
After that, there will be a second official long weekend marked by the SEP calendar and the Federal Labor Law (LFT). The second long weekend will be for the anniversary of the birth of Benito Juárez and will be moved to Monday, March 16.
As for the longest vacation of the first half of the year, Easter 2026 (Semana Santa) has also already been defined. The vacation period will begin on Monday, March 30, and conclude on Friday, April 10.
This means that students and teachers must resume academic activities on Monday, April 13, 2026, with no additional changes to the calendar.
