Yesenia Méndez Rodríguez, personal secretary to Uruapan Mayor Grecia Quiroz, was arrested this Friday by Mexican authorities for alleged links to the murder of the former mayor of the same city, Carlos Manzo, which occurred on November 1st in the state of Michoacán (western Mexico), according to the National Registry of Detentions.
The arrest was carried out by members of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) and the State Prosecutor's Office, which will initiate the corresponding investigations into Méndez Rodríguez's connection to the death of Manzo, who was Quiroz's ex-husband.
The capture took place in the office of Quiroz, who was elected mayor of Uruapan following Manzo's homicide late last year.
In addition, according to Mexican media, the woman—who also served as the former mayor's personal secretary since September 2024—was placed at the disposal of the Local Prosecutor's Office's Unit for Investigation and Prosecution of Drug Dealing so she could appear before a judge who allegedly issued an arrest warrant against her.
In a social media post on July 21, 2024, Manzo described Méndez Rodríguez as a "prepared, responsible, hardworking, and entrepreneurial woman who is characterized by her social sensitivity," announcing that she would be the person accompanying him as the head of the mayor's office in Uruapan.
At the time he was murdered, the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, reported that Manzo had federal and municipal protection since 2024, which was reinforced at the beginning of 2025, although the mayor's family claims that authorities had not provided him with protection despite his requests.
At the end of 2025, seven guards who were part of Manzo's security detail were arrested.
According to authorities in Uruapan, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), The Knights Templar, Los Viagras, Pueblos Unidos, and Los Blancos de Troya operate in the area.
The murder of Manzo triggered a wave of protests throughout Mexico due to the insecurity crisis being experienced in several parts of the country.
