Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum rejected the accusations on Monday from Argentine leader Javier Milei, who claimed that the Mexican government participated in an alleged social media campaign against Argentina during the 2026 World Cup, and reiterated that her administration maintains a policy of respect for the self-determination of peoples.

During her morning press conference, the president called Milei's statements false and asserted that the Mexican government does not intervene in the internal affairs of other countries.

"It is false. There is no campaign against any country in the world, nor against any government in the world," she stated.

The Mexican leader maintained that, on the contrary, her administration has been the subject of attacks from various fronts, although she insisted that Mexico does not respond in kind.

"Here there is indeed a campaign orchestrated from many places against our government, but we are not accustomed to meddling with other countries," she declared.

Sheinbaum reiterated that Mexican foreign policy continues to be guided by the constitutional principle of non-intervention.

"Again. Self-determination of peoples and we ask for the same. Respect," she added.

¿Qué dijo Javier Milei contra México durante el Mundial 2026?

The president's statements respond to allegations made by Milei during an interview with Radio Mitre, in which he stated that the Brazilian government funded a campaign against Argentina during the World Cup and claimed that this strategy also had the backing of Mexico and the U.S. Democratic Party.

"Do you know who put the most money into this anti-Argentina campaign? The government of Brazil; 25% of the resources came from there," maintained the Argentine president, who linked that alleged offensive to criticisms spread on social media regarding the performance of the Argentine national team during the tournament and other allegations related to the South American country.

Milei asserted that Argentina has become "an emblem of freedom" and attributed the criticism to the fact that his government represents, as he put it, "a beacon of the West" that challenges those who "hide behind the present state."

The accusations occurred amid a new episode of diplomatic tension between Argentina and Brazil, after the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled its ambassador in Buenos Aires for consultations following insults made by Milei against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

During a Liberal Party (PL) convention in Brazil, the Argentine leader called Lula a "thief," accused him of promoting socialism in Latin America, and also criticized magistrate Alexandre de Moraes, who led the judicial process that resulted in the conviction of former President Jair Bolsonaro for coup-plotting.

Mexico and Argentina have maintained political differences since Milei's rise to power in December 2023, although the Sheinbaum government has insisted that its foreign policy is governed by the principles of self-determination of peoples and non-intervention, avoiding taking a stance on the internal political processes of other countries.
