Argentine President Javier Milei sparked controversy on social media after speaking out about the criticism the country has received following the Albiceleste's defeat in the 2026 World Cup final. With a forceful message, the president asserted that many of the disparaging remarks toward Argentines stem from envy. “They are jealous of us, we are good at almost everything,” he claimed.
In statements published on his official Instagram account, Javier Milei responded to the comments that emerged following Argentina's loss to Spain and the atmosphere of criticism generated on the internet.
The president maintained that, despite the questioning and criticism, Argentina continues to be a country that stands out. “They are jealous of us,” were the words that provoked the most reactions on social media, generating thousands of negative comments toward the president.
“The problem with Argentina is that we are striking, we do not go unnoticed, they are jealous of us, and we are good at almost everything. I’m sorry, but someone had to say it,” was the complete phrase with which Milei defended the country's image and rejected the criticism that, according to his position, seeks to discredit Argentines.
Among the comments triggered by the politician's words were: “I suspect it would have been a better strategy to stay quiet,” “You are the greatest embarrassment in the world. You are the living proof that we are not the best,” “The problem in Argentina is the president,” “You have to know how to lose,” “The problem is that the world thinks we are all like you,” and “Mr. President, with all due respect, I would ask that you focus on governing and addressing the problems that really affect the country, instead of fueling controversies that originate on social media.”
While some users celebrated the president coming to Argentina's defense, others considered that the message further fueled polarization.
The president's statements come in a context where, after the World Cup final, numerous videos, memes, and posts directed at both the Argentine National Team and its fans went viral; the controversy gave way to debates about national identity, football rivalry, and the role of public figures in responding to these types of controversies.
