Milei attacks the UN: calls it "useless" and questions its role in the Falklands

The UN is a "useless" organization that feeds "a caste of parasites," Argentine President Javier Milei said this Wednesday during his speech at the General Assembly in New York.

The right-wing leader also criticized the multilateral body's inaction in the dispute with the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands, its handling of the 2020 pandemic, and opposed state control of artificial intelligence.

The UN "has become a useless organization, which only serves to feed a caste of fatally arrogant parasites disguised as well-intentioned bureaucrats," Milei launched in his speech.

"Those who should guarantee collective security and human rights have failed in their task and instead allowed chaos, violence, and international terrorism," he continued.

Milei referred to Argentina's historical claim over the Falkland Islands, in British hands since 1833, and to the oil extraction operations authorized by London near the archipelago, which according to Buenos Aires defy a UN resolution from half a century ago.

"Those who follow the rules have no reward for doing so, while those who fail to comply receive no reprisal. That is why the Falklands is not only a matter between Argentina and the United Kingdom, it also poses a question about the capacity of this organization to enforce its own resolutions," he said.
