A control judge in the Mexican state of Morelos (center) released the former director of the state-owned company Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), Víctor Rodríguez Padilla, on Tuesday with precautionary measures. He had been in provisional detention after being accused of committing domestic violence against his wife and his minor son.

Magistrate Consuelo Adriana Correa considered that the former official can face the investigation against him while at liberty, as she determined the circumstances allow for it.

According to local media reports, the decision was influenced by the fact that on Monday, Rodríguez Padilla's wife, María Felicia Jiménez, granted him a pardon and expressed her wish not to continue with the legal proceedings, after having reported him to the Public Prosecutor's Office and posting a video on her social media networks in which he is seen hitting her on the ground.

Despite being released following the victim's recent pardon, the former Pemex official will have to report to the courts monthly, as the investigation against him for the crime of domestic violence against his wife and his minor son continues officially following his recent indictment.

He has also been prohibited from approaching his wife and son, and is forbidden from leaving the country and must remain at his home in Mexico City, the details of which he provided to the judge.

Rodríguez Padilla was arrested last week in Mexico City thanks to an operation by security forces, which caused controversy in Mexico as he is a former high-ranking official of the federal government.

Furthermore, this case occurs in a country where violence against women is one of the main social blights.

The Ministry for Women described his arrest as a "message of zero impunity for anyone who commits violence against women," while Sheinbaum guaranteed that her Administration will not "protect anyone" in a case like this.

The video that led to the opening of the judicial investigation was published almost a month after the official left the management of Pemex in the context of a financial restructuring of the oil company, which has high levels of debt.
