The traditional Rosca de Reyes and resellers were once again the center of attention this year after individuals, without prior orders made at the wholesale supermarkets, attempted to take all the pieces of this highly sought-after seasonal bread.

Two videos have gone viral on social media that present the same problem: hoarding justified as entrepreneurship.

¿Por qué los revendedores de Rosca de Reyes generan indignación en redes?

Outrage over the excessive purchase of roscas in the middle of the season broke out on social media after a video, apparently recorded in the aisles of a Costco in Mexico, shows a woman who had a tower of Roscas de Reyes inside her shopping cart and two more columns next to it, apparently totaling more than 50 pieces.

One of the store's shoppers approaches to try and take one, but the reseller refuses, leading them to start arguing.

Immediately, someone else is heard shouting, "Everyone wants a rosca!" Other women stop their carts and together they swoop in on the reseller's towers.

"Grab them, grab them, grab them!" they urge.

Amidst nervous laughter, the person filming is heard astonished by the argument that is escalating, commenting: "Well, how greedy."

The alleged hoarder, seeing that the roscas she intended to buy are being taken one by one, yells at them: "Only take the ones on the floor," but she is ignored by the shoppers who quickly walk away with their Roscas de Reyes in hand.

A similar situation of hoarding this bread, which is traditional in Mexico to cut on January 5th and 6th, was recorded at another supermarket, Sam's Club.

The video was shared by influencer Josué Jaib, who recorded a woman trying to take all the Roscas de Reyes that the store had placed next to some displays for open purchase.

The alleged reseller, who moments earlier had covered her face, demands that the man not take any rosca because they are all hers since she plans to take them. A fact that the TikToker rebukes.

"Understand that you cannot reserve them... what kind of business, that is not a business. She says she has them reserved... you haven't paid for them, ma'am," they argue with the woman.

Then Jaib takes a box and the woman goes after him to try and snatch it away, but she does not succeed.

"Resellers of Roscas de Reyes think this is entrepreneurship," the man criticizes.

¿Qué simboliza la rosca de reyes en México?

According to Catholic tradition, the Rosca de Reyes in Mexico represents the infinite love for God and is related to the story of the Epiphany of the Lord.

This narrative tells of the journey made by Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar to find the Baby Jesus born in Bethlehem.

The three Wise Men supposedly arrived three days after his birth, where they presented him with gifts of gold, myrrh, and incense.

In the rosca, the candied fruits represent jewels.

¿Qué significa el muñequito de la rosca de reyes?

The little doll in the rosca represents Baby Jesus and is hidden inside the bread, just as his mother Mary and Joseph had to hide so he could be born.

According to Mexican tradition, whoever finds the doll when cutting the rosca "has to provide the tamales" to celebrate Candlemas Day on February 2nd, when the Christ child placed in the nativity scene is dressed.
