The Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) activated a tsunami alert in Mexico following the this Friday morning off the coast of Chiapas, prompting a call for the population to stay away from beaches and coastal areas until further notice.

According to the Tsunami Warning Center of the Secretariat of the Navy (CAT-SEMAR), the earthquake occurred at 08:49 hours, with an epicenter 135 kilometers southwest of Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

After analyzing seismic data and historical records, the agency determined that the earthquake has the potential to generate anomalous sea level variations of up to 1.05 meters in the region near the epicenter.

In Tsunami Warning Bulletin 001, the CAT-SEMAR reported that civil protection authorities at all three levels of government must implement the corresponding preventive actions.

President Claudia Sheinbaum reported that, following the 7.4 magnitude earthquake, emergency protocols were immediately activated in Chiapas.

The president called on the population to stay informed through official channels and to follow the instructions of Civil Protection at all times.
